Events Calendar 2019

Throughout the year, club members have opportunities to attend national courses and competitions organised by The Japan Karate Association in England (JKA England). These are an excellent way to supplement your regular training and benefit from the tuition of Ohta Sensei and visiting instructors from JKA Headquarters in Japan and worldwide.

JANUARY 2019

Shiranamikai 10-Year Anniversary Celebration: Training & Dinner

Saturday 5th January, 4-5.30pm | Training followed by dinner | Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre

All our karate friends are welcome to join us to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the club!

A lot has happened over the last decade but the core principles of the club remain the same: training always comes first, then eating. Remaining true to our ethos we have an hour and a half of training with Ohta Yoshinobu, Chief Instructor of The Japan Karate Association in England. After this we’ll be off to enjoy a club dinner. RSVP as places will need to be pre-booked.

Had too much to eat last night? Come and work it off at our Sunday morning session in Stanmore. Then join us to eat some more on what will be the actual 10th anniversary having opened on 6th January 2009 at Harrow School.

National Kata Course followed by AGM

Sunday 6th January | 11am-2pm Training | 2.30-6pm AGM | Hertfordshire Sports Village
Kata course is open to all grades. AGM is for club chief instructors by invite. Kumite Course

Saturday 12th January | 11am-12pm All Grades | 12-1.30pm Brown & Black Belts | Northamptonshire

Kumite course is open to all grades. Cost £10.

Referee Course

MARCH 2019

Club Special Training and Kyu Grading

Friday 29th March 2019 | 6.30-8pm training, 8-9pm grading Harrow School, Harrow-on-the-Hill

Ohta Sensei will be visiting to deliver one of his excellent training sessions followed by a kyu grading for those who are eligible.

Check in good time that your licence is in date with a photograph. Those grading should hand in their licence book with grading fee at least one week beforehand. If you are training only and haven’t prepaid, you can sign-in and pay your £12 training fee on the day.

Mothers' Day and the start of British Summer Time, regular training

Sunday 31st March | 10-11am North London Collegiate School, Stanmore

Happy Mothers’ Day! Give them time to prepare for the rest of your special day by training in the morning. And don’t forget to set your body clocks for an hour less in bed.

APRIL 2019

JKA European Senior Championship

Saturday 6th April, Norway

The JKA European Karate Championship takes place at the Stavanger Idrettshall Sports Centre, Norway.

Shiranamikai karate classes run as usual.

Our usual Easter Eggstra training will take place after the karate class finishes.

Spring 2019 Gasshuku hosted by The Japan Karate Association in England

Friday 3rd - Monday 6th May 2019 | 5-8pm Friday, 11am-2pm Saturday-Monday Training

Special guest instructors Ogura Yasunori 7th Dan and Okuie Satomi 5th Dan from the Tokyo Sohonbu, and Sawada Kazuhiro 7th Dan and Sergio Gneo 7th Dan from Belgium join Ohta Yoshinobu 7th Dan for this world-renowned international training camp.

We encourage all club members to attend this four-day course to train with some of the world’s best instructors. The Gatwick Arora Hotel is just 5 minutes away and offers a limited number of rooms available at a discounted rate for course attendees. Fingers crossed for karaoke on Sunday…

Costs: £35 Training per day / £120 for all four days (ages 16+) 

£25 Training per day / £90 for all four days (ages 15 and below) 

£20 Party on Sunday evening

The JKA Junior European Karate Championship takes place in Kadan, Czech Republic.

Shiranamikai 8th Karate Summer Camp

Monday 30th July — Friday 3rd August | 10am-Midday O2 Centre, Finchley Road

There’s no need to worry about getting bored over the summer holiday because we’ll be holding our eighth, 5-day summer training camp at the O2 Centre.
As with previous summer camps, this will be a learning and development course with lots of chances to explore techniques and practise applications while learning advanced katas. Students who attend the whole week (on time) will receive a certificate. After training on Friday, we’ll be going out for a club lunch!
Costs: £60 for the week if booked in advance (you’ll also train for free at the Tuesday and Wednesday evening classes) or £14 per day.

Shell-a-nami-kai Beach Training

Thursday pm 15th - Saturday am 17th August

Thursday afternoon, Friday, Saturday morning, then back to Swiss Cottage for 4pm.
Our beach training sessions have always been tremendous fun whatever the weather. There’s lots to do in the surrounding areas, too, where castles, lighthouses and mini railways abound.
Friday evening will be our club barbecue/dinner.

The Japan Karate Association in England 2019 Shotokan Open Championship

Saturday 7th December | Arrive 9am | Kata from 10am | Kumite from 2pm | Finals from 4pm

A great opportunity to compete alongside your clubmates with Shotokan competitors from across England and Further afield. Whether you’d like to participate yourself or just watch, come along and support the club! Parents, volunteers are always welcome to assist on the timekeepers desk. Training will be provided and you will get to see the performances close up and for free.

Cost: £12 entry for kata or kumite, £20 for both. Team kata by arrangement

British Summer Time Ends

Sunday 27th October | 10-11am North London Collegiate School, Stanmore

You get an extra hour in bed to help you feel refreshed before your regular Sunday morning karate session so you’ll be able to train extra hard in class.
