Karate as a physical module of DofE

Choosing to participate in Shotokan karate with Shiranamikai can count towards the Physical Section of your Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. We have helped a number of people achieve their target DofE modules. Please check applicability with your DofE Leader before commencing.

Learning karate has a multitude of benefits: increasing strength and stamina, self-defence, and wellbeing – practising karate is a superb method to control and alleviate stress.

We also have access to additional training courses provided through our governing body, The Japan Karate Association in England. The JKA World Federation currently operates in more than 100 countries worldwide, and with Shotokan being the most popular style of karate, you’ll never be far from a dojo.

Classes themselves are generally split into three modules: group foundational movement, partner and team work for controlled self-defence application and individual form/patterns practise.

You don’t need to be fit to start. Students can attend classes from once to several times each week and progress at their own pace. Goals can be set with targets such as gradings every three months or competitions twice per year. All are for personal development, and participants are expected to apply themselves by keeping a record of the classes they attend. Some useful resources are available to help track progress.
