Everybody at Shiranamikai was delighted to have been part of Japan Matsuri 2024; the Japan-UK cultural highlight of the year. The crowd were fantastic – thanks for your support – and thank you to the team from the Embassy of Japan for making us feel welcome. We’re looking forward to the next one!

Special Training & Grading with Ohta Sensei, September 2024

We had an excellent training session with Ohta Yoshinobu Sensei this September. Standing basics seemed quick to progress into dynamic combinations performed up and down the dojo, and into challenging partner drills. If you weren’t well-warmed-up and at least a little sweaty, you weren’t there. Sensei took senior grades, and those who were keen, through the kata Unsu.

Congratulations to those who passed their grading!

JKA 1st Dan certificate, all the way from The Japan Karate Association HQ in Tokyo. And another excuse for a group photo three months later. Spot the difference.

Special Training & Grading with Ohta Sensei, June 2024

On his recent visit to Shiranamikai Ohta Sensei demonstrated correct hip alignment through the various stages of a kicking technique: the start, its culmination, return, and provided supporting exercises.

Kumite sequences incorporated the main Shotokan stances of front, side, and back, while moving a different leg to expected was an additional and enjoyable challenge.

Jion was the chosen kata for seniors where they were able to put the lesson’s themes into practice.

Congratulations to those who took their grading!

JKA England Spring Gasshuku, April 2024

Sawada Kazuhiro 8th Dan from JKA Belgium, joined Sohonbu instructors Okuma Koichiro 7th Dan and Hirose Hikaru 3rd Dan from JKA Japan, as guests of Ohta Yoshinobu 7th Dan, chief instructor of JKA England, for the spring 2024 gasshuku.

Sawada Sensei’s drills inspired by Bassai Dai’s uke kaeshi sequences were demanding. Okuma Sensei was engaging, charismatic and encouraged everybody. Hirose Sensei’s kumite was based on the mechanics of body contraction and expansion to absorb, evade, and launch back in towards an opponent. Ohta Sensei broke down techniques effortlessly.

As well as offering a tremendous training environment, these brilliant karate courses with The Japan Karate Association are an opportunity to grade and take instructor exams, so congratulations to all who passed on this occasion.

Special Training & Grading with Ohta Sensei, March 2024

JKA England’s Chief Instructor, Ohta Yoshinobu Sensei, visited Shiranamikai to teach a special karate class in March. Students were put through their paces with fundamentals and challenging ‘kaeshi’ partner exercises. Sensei taught the kata Heian Nidan in detail followed by a very technical Bassai Dai for seniors.

Congratulations to those who graded!
